Should You Sell Before the Holidays—or Wait Until Spring?

Every fall, homeowners face the same question: Is now a good time to sell, or should I wait until spring? Conventional wisdom says to hold off—but the truth is a bit more nuanced.
The Case for Selling Now
Less competition can be a major advantage. Many sellers pause until after the holidays, meaning your home can stand out more easily right now. Plus, the buyers who are active in the fall and winter are typically serious—they’re relocating, have a timeline, or just missed out earlier in the year.
And let’s not forget: homes can look especially inviting this time of year, with cozy lighting and holiday décor adding to the emotional pull.
The Case for Waiting Until Spring
Spring always brings more buyer activity. Families planning moves before summer get serious, and listings typically surge. That can mean more eyes on your property—but also more competition.
If your home needs updates or prep work, waiting might also give you time to tackle those projects and come out strong in the spring market.
What the Data Shows
Historically, homes listed in October–November often sell for nearly the same price as spring listings—but with fewer competing homes. In South Orange County right now, inventory remains low, which gives sellers leverage even as buyers become more selective.
Bottom Line
If your home is market-ready, there’s no reason to wait. You could benefit from motivated buyers and a less crowded market. If you’re still prepping, use the winter months strategically to get ready for a strong spring debut.
Either way, timing is important—but preparation and strategy matter most.
